San Jose (Editor). The director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Pascal Lamy, stressed today that Costa Rica is an example of small countries in the promotion and active participation of multilateral free trade in the world.

According to Lamy, the Costa Rican domestic policies and actions in the WTO are the route to be followed by small countries in this field.

Lamy is in Costa Rica where he participates in events to commemorate the 20th anniversary of accession of Costa Rica to the multilateral trading system, now represented by the WTO.

That organization now has 158 countries and strives to agree among its members a new era of openness in world trade, especially agricultural products.

The negotiations are conducted in the so-called Doha Round, whose deliberations have been repeatedly postponed to disagreements between developed and developing countries.

Lamy acknowledged yesterday that there are difficulties in advancing the Doha Round, despite the agreement to end this year. He said the organization intends to strengthen existing and establish new mechanisms for smaller countries to benefit.

One of the most known and used is the system for resolving commercial disputes, in which, for example, Costa Rica beat the United States litigation and avoided the imposition of quotas on trade in textile products.
